INTRODUCTION FOR "ACCIDENTAL SAFARI"
Many people recognize the importance of planning for retirement. They develop an estate plan and create a budget. Some also purchase long-term healthcare insurance. They feel well prepared for the future. But these people may one day find themselves in a crisis they didn't plan for.
An accident or unexpected medical diagnosis suddenly thrusts them into hostile and unfamiliar territory. They find themselves, or someone they care about, trapped by circumstances entirely beyond their control. They are completely unprepared for the onslaught of immediate and complex medical issues and decisions they must make. It's as though they have been kidnapped and sent on a sudden and unplanned Safari against their will. They would never have elected to take this "Accidental Safari," but they were not given a choice. Without warning, they are now in a fight for survival.
Whether it's your journey or you are the advocate for someone else on this Safari, the shock and the fear of traveling this unfamiliar path can be crippling. The good news is that the paths through this jungle have been heavily traveled and are predictable. Because they are predictable, they can be anticipated and, if they can be anticipated, you can be prepared.
This book is not intended to be a substitute for the counsel of professional financial, medical, and legal advisors who are attuned to your individual circumstances and needs. However, if you or a loved one have found yourselves on an unexpected health journey, this book can be your guide to the options that remain to you when your "normal" has been stripped away.
Just as a traveler needs a map, this book will light a path for you through unknown territory. It will help you identify the good guys from the bad guys and the poisonous plants from the edible ones. Whatever the reason you now find yourself on "Safari," be it a traumatic stroke, heart attack, accident, or the onset of a progressive disease such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, you world has forever changed.
